Sonja Elona Riedel Weiss, age 87, of Collinsville, IL, was born on July 14, 1934, in Dolni Lutyne, Czech Republic, and died on October 19, 2021, at her residence.
Sonja married Karl Weiss on February 28, 1953, in Oberstdorf, Germany, and together they moved to the United States in 1955. She worked at Obear-Nester Glass Company in East St. Louis, IL until it closed in 1978. Sonja was a loving wife, mother, and Omi. She was a wonderful cook, homemaker, and a proud member of the International Women’s Club of Collinsville. Sonja had many lifelong friendships that she cherished so much.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Weiss, her son, Manfred Weiss; her parents, Josef Riedel & Gertrud Schaefer, nee Riesner; and six siblings both stateside and overseas, with a few preceding her in death.
Sonja is survived by her children, Christian Weiss of Collinsville, IL, Walter (Linda) Weiss of Indianapolis, IN, and Heidi (Daniel) Frazier of Washington, DC; 8 grandchildren, Eric Weiss, Kimberly Bingheim, Garrett Weiss, Matthew Weiss, Marcus Weiss, Emily Edwards, Austin Frazier and Alyssa Frazier; and 5 great-grandchildren, Jack Bingheim, Liv Bingheim, Branson Weiss, Charlotte Weiss, and Gavin Edwards. Oliver Gramlich is a special friend that she loved as a son.
A memorial service will be held to honor Sonja and her beloved husband, Karl, on November 13, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Collinsville. Interment will be held at a later date.
