James E. Haider, Sr., age 86, of Swansea, IL, born on June 24, 1935, in East St. Louis, IL, died on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at his residence.
James was the Valedictorian of the first graduating class of Assumption High School, East St. Louis, IL, in 1953. He was a United States Army Veteran and was honorably discharged as a Reserve Commissioned Officer in 1968, and he received a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Illinois. James worked at Roosevelt Federal Savings & Loan in St. Louis, MO, Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. in St. Louis MO as a Savings and Loan Examiner for the Office of Thrift Supervision with the United States Government. He was a very active member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, member of the Men of St. Joseph and Divine Mercy Cenacle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce M. Haider, nee Edwards; a daughter, Jeanine M. Haider; his parents, Carl J. and Blanche M., nee McNally Haider; and his brother, Donald J. Haider.
James is survived by his children, Jimmy (Barb) Haider of Lebanon, IL, and Joan (Mark) Halwachs of O’Fallon, IL; his grandchildren, Kristen (Brad) Chumbley, Andrea (Jordan) Roper, and Katie Halwachs; and his great-grandchildren, Avery Roper and Reagan Roper.
Memorials may be made to St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St Augustine of Canterbury Church, Belleville, IL.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, Belleville, IL, with Msgr. Bill McGhee officiating. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
