Betty Biggs Obituary

Betty J. Biggs, nee Butler, age 91, of O’Fallon, IL, born on July 6, 1927 in East St. Louis, IL died on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Jefferson City Manor, Jefferson City, MO.

Betty Jean retired in August 1989 as nutrition center manager, part of Belleville Area College Senior Nutrition Program located at the Caseyville United Methodist Church. She also was employed as Medical Secretary at Castle House Convalescent Center in Belleville, IL, receptionist for Dr. McCann and Dr. Cox, as well as ward clerk on the orthopedic floor at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.

Family and church were both very much a part of Betty Jean’s life.  She taught Sunday school more than 30 years, was a member of the Christian Education Associates of Southern Illinois, and taught the confirmation class in 1967, both at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Fairview Heights, IL.  She also served in many positions of the Women’s Evening Guild, including as President.  In January of 1987, she and her husband, George, became members of Caseyville United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and doing special music at times, and serving in different capacities in the Women’s Society as President and as other chairpersons.

Leisure times found Betty Jean with family and friends playing board games, ping pong, Scrabble, Monopoly and Dominos.  She was an avid bowler and most of all a rousing game of croquet, until into her 70th year.  Reading also was a part of her personal time.  Historical and Christian novels as well as poetry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Biggs; her parents, Herman D. and Odessa Q, nee Grant, Butler; her 2 brothers, Edward E. Butler and Marvin H. Butler; her sister, Bernadine L. Mollett; and her daughter-in-law, Joyce D. Biggs.

Betty is survived by her children, Larry J. (Cathy) Biggs of Trenton, IL, Linda L. (Richard) Ervin of Smithton, IL and Cynthia S. (Wayne) Gross of Jefferson City, MO; her 4 grandsons, John D. (Jeannie) Biggs, Jason D. (Robin) Ervin, Bradley T. (Rochelle) Ervin, and Matthew J. (Meghan) Biggs; her 6 great grandchildren, Caden Biggs, Collin Biggs, Hannah Biggs, Calahan Ervin, Cassie Rogers and Jeremy Varady; and her 2 special nieces, Beverly Ann (Charles) Cooper of Dayton, OH and Della Mae Condon of Beaumont, CA.
