Mr. Wesley Burton Griggs was born on July 31,1944, in St. Louis, MO to the union of Moses “Doc” Griggs and Maggie (Phillips) Griggs. He was the youngest of 10 blood brothers and sisters and five adopted.
Wesley graduated from Madison High School in 1962, and went on to enlist in the United States Army from November 1962 until November 1968. He was employed with McDonnell Douglas/Boeing and worked there for 2 years; later, he worked at Granite City Steel/ U. S. Steel as an inspector and retired after 37 years in 2008.
In 1972, Wesley symbolized his dedication to Jehovah by baptism. Throughout his years as a servant to Jehovah he assisted in aiding numerous family members, friends and neighbors into Jehovah’s organization. He also served faithfully in various roles within the organization as an elder, pioneer and ministerial servant.
On April 20, 1974, he married Mary Martha Riley in Clarksdale, MS. To this union two sons and a daughter were born. Wesley was a loving and dedicated husband and father, who could always be found with a smile on his face. He had a loving, upbeat and joyful spirit which could always put a smile on your face as he always enjoyed making others laugh. Wesley relished spending time with family, being in nature, traveling and the ministry.
Until his death, Wesley was a resident of East Saint Louis, IL. He fell into a deep sleep on May 3, 2022, at home surrounded by his loved ones.
Wesley was preceded by his parents; four sisters, Lubirder Payne, Lavera Benton, Charlsie Taylor, and Rosie Lee Baucum; eight Brothers: Solomon Griggs, Douglas Griggs, Earl Griggs, James Griggs, Augusta Griggs, Gerald Griggs Sr., O’Larry Griggs and Donald Griggs.
Loving Memories of Wesley Griggs will be cherished by, his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Mary Martha Griggs; his brother, Roger (Yvonne) Griggs; his sister, Vernice (Elvers) Johnson; his children, Wesley (Ashley) Griggs Jr., Kara (Jason) Stewart, Philip (Ciera) Griggs, Sr.; his grandchildren, Gabrielle Griggs, Philip Griggs, Jr., Wesley Griggs, III, Jaylan Stewart and Kameron Griggs; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Kassly Mortuary, Ltd., Fairview Heights, IL.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. at Kassly Mortuary, Ltd., Fairview Heights, IL, with Elder Dale Peter officiating.
