Virginia L. Wylie, nee Martinez, age 88, of Belleville, IL, born on June 4, 1933, in East St. Louis, IL, died on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.
Known as much for her cooking as her mega-watt smile, Virginia was an accomplished baker, wedding cake decorator and an avid crocheter. She was a passionate sports fan, fervently following her beloved Cardinals and Blues. If there was one thing, she loved more than sports, it was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren – who never heard the word “no” from her. Crying babies did not stand a chance in her arms. In fact, Virginia gave the best hugs to all her family – whether they were 3 months or 33 years old. There was no one more comforting. But above all, Virginia was a great listener who always told it like it was and spoke her mind making her an amazing sounding board and a remarkable role model.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Wylie, Jr.; her daughter, Virginia Hartman; her brother Edward Martinez, Jr.; two sisters, Vivian Bradley and Mary Ann Martinez; and her parents, Edward and Margaret nee Szakaski Martinez Sr.
Virginia is survived by her children, Cathleen Wylie, Arthur Wylie III, and Edward (Sharon) Wylie; her grandchildren, Jennifer Hartman, Jessica Bevineau, Anastasia (Jaime) Lopez, Lindsay (Jake) Nichelson and Stephen (Bernadette) Wylie; her great-grandchildren, Kristin Bevineau, Annabelle Wylie, Millicent Lopez, Arthur James Lopez, D.J. Bevineau, Desiree Bevineau, Bianca Lopez, and, very soon, Piper Nichelson; her brother, James Martinez; and her sister, Margaret Harvey.
