Verna Rose Nunez, age 83, of Fairview Heights, IL, born on June 8, 1940, in East St. Louis, IL, died on Sunday, September 24, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Verna retired after almost 30 years as a Budget Analyst with Jefferson National Parks Service, St. Louis, MO. She enjoyed the seasons and holidays that brought some of her favorite things from hyacinths to tulips to mums. She watched her squirrel and bird feeders which were visited often by her beautiful hummingbirds and feisty squirrels. Each season brought joy with birthdays, sporting events and holidays. She enjoyed them all and loved to have her house decorated. She planned for family gatherings and always opened her house to everyone. The family gatherings always resulted in laughter and many memorable stories. Her most cherished role was being Nana to her six grandchildren. She often picked up the grandkids and would stop on the way home to buy treats. Many car rides resulted in some mischievous behavior, making fun memories, and laughing with Nana. Our family times will be cherished forever.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Nunez; her parents, Katherine, nee Kolb and Emmett E. Hamilton; her sister, Buddy Hagely; and her brother, Emmett Hamilton.
Verna is survived by her children, Kimberly (Jim) Falk of Swansea, IL, Tamara (Greg) Leib of Swansea, IL, Amando Nunez (Yvonne Barnes) of Belleville, IL, and Ramona Nunez of Fairview Heights, IL; her grandchildren, Ryan, Adam and Alek Falk, and Jackson, Addison, and Patton Leib; and her siblings, Billie (Don) Eccher of Millstadt, IL, Ernie Hamilton of Fairview Heights, IL, Shari Hamilton of Fairview Heights, IL, Ronnie (Carla) Hamilton of Fairview Heights, IL, and Ross (Glenna) Hamilton of Hollywood Heights, IL. Verna is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to the American Heart and Lung Association.
All services will be private, followed by burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Belleville, IL. A Celebration of Life, for family and friends, will be held for Verna at a later date.
