Susan “Susie” Gay Sovar, age 82, of Maryville, IL, born on October 13, 1941, in St. Louis, MO, died on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Edwardsville Care Center, Edwardsville, IL.
Susie never locked her door and was always a loving mother and caregiver to many people over the years. She was a former clerk of the Circuit Court in Clayton, MO, a former election judge in Madison and St. Clair Counties, a medical transcriptionist at Anderson Hospital, and a former customer service representative with Wal-Mart in Glen Carbon, IL. Susie was also the former President and Chaplain for the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #5691 in Collinsville, IL.
She was preceded in death by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph A. and Kimberly Schallert; her granddaughter, Mia Hickman; her great-granddaughter, Lettie Nyland; her parents, Harry and Myrtle, nee Cain Brooks; and her siblings, Mary Lawler, Alice Childs, Sharon Cissell, and George Hunt.
Susie is survived by her husband, John M. Sovar; her children, Edward W. (Diann) Schallert of St. Louis, MO, Catherine M. (Paul) Hart of Glen Carbon, IL, and Susan E. (Todd) Hickman of Fenton, MO; her 7 grandchildren, Meagan (Christopher) Nyland, Paul J. (Megan) Hart, Mary Schallert, Grace Schallert, Michael Hickman, Alex Schallert and Robbie Schallert; her great-grandchildren, Ragnar Nyland, Gunnar Nyland, Emma Hart and Olivia Hart; and previously married to Alexander Schallert of O’Fallon, MO.
As a former breast cancer survivor, Susie’s family prefers that any memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
A procession will leave Kassly Mortuary, Ltd., Fairview Heights, IL., at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO., for a 1:15 p.m. graveside service. Immediately following graveside services, a Celebration of Life will be held. Details will be announced at the service.
