My heart is torn... between feeling great sorrow for the loss of a truly great man....and celebrating, with joy, the life of a true legend!
I had the pleasure of coaching Ray's son's, Ray Jr. and John. at Ursuline High School in Youngstown, Ohio.
I knew what a tireless community leader, Dr. Carter was,and we all knew what a legend he was at Youngstown State University ( his records, his leadership on and off the field).....but by relationship with Ray- the man- still leaves me with
the best memories a man can possess.
John and Ray Jr. were the "best of the best" as far as academic and athletic leadership. But, most of all, they- like their dad,-were true examples of what a Christian man should be. I will always remember them for that.
Ray, the dad, would often call me at home, during track season, and he would not even talk about his sons' great performances... but rather always asked if Raymond, or John was respectful, and if they acted in the best interested of the team.
I will miss you, and I am a better man for having known you.

....." I have fought the good fight
..... I have finished the race
... I have kept the faith"

I knew your dad since 1943 when we started first grade at Scienceville Grade
School. Having gone all through school with Ray and graduating in the class of 1955 together I thought you should know he was one of the nicest and most well-liked students. We saw each other at many of our class reunions and everyone, including myself, was very happy to get re-acquainted with Ray. Your dad made it a point to tell everyone about his amazing 3 sons and how proud he was of all of you! Your dad was a good friend to many and he, and your mom , will certainly be missed at any future reunions. May God bless you and all of Ray's family.
