Leslie E. (Les) Stege Jr., age 83, of Caseyville, IL, born on November 25, 1941, in East St. Louis, IL., died on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Memorial Hospital East, Shiloh, IL. Les was the only child of the late Leslie Edward and Marie Margaret, nee Smith Stege, Sr.
Les loved academic life. Ever the perpetual student, Les received multiple degrees from St. Louis University and SIU-Carbondale. In his professional life, he was employed at both universities as well as a professor for 25 years at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
When he returned to Illinois, he worked at SWIC, the Belleville campus of Lindenwood College, and SIU-Edwardsville. Les worked as a financial, academic, career, and personal counselor. He loved working in higher education. He especially loved teaching graduate students the skills and art of counseling.
In retirement, Les continued his life-long love of learning. He had an eccentric nature and unique perspective of the world. His interests ran the gambit from sports to consumer electronics to medicine to everything about dogs. He was a dog man through and through.
He is survived by many loving cousins and friends.
Graveside committal will be held at a later date, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
