John Knox Obituary

John E. Knox, age 86, of Fairview Heights, IL, born on May 9, 1934 in Waukegan, IL, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.

John studied general education at Northwestern University and Eureka College before entering military service with the Air Force in 1953. He served as a Radar Operator with the 798th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, ADC, Belleville AF Station active duty until September 5, 1958.  While stationed in Belleville, Illinois John met and fell in love with Evelyn Detchemendy. John and Evelyn were married on April 19, 1958. John remained in the Air Force reserves until 1963. John completed his undergraduate degree at University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois in 1959 and then attended the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry followed by a 3-year residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Following his training he moved to O’Fallon, Illinois with his wife and three children and joined an Oral Surgery practice in Belleville.  John loved the outdoors, gardening, and animals. He was an avid sportsman enjoying tennis, golf, skiing, sailing, and scuba diving. Watching road racing and the love of sports cars was a lifelong passion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand J. and Esther C., nee Christensen Knox.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn C. Knox, nee Detchemendy; his children, John S. (Irena) Knox of Shiloh, IL, Kurt E. (Dawn) Knox of Edgewood, WA, and Barbara A. (Esebio) Quintal of O’Fallon, IL; his grandchildren, Ryan Knox, Katie Vasquez, Kara Diehl, Connor Knox, Tonya Ternovaya, Kyle Knox, Kristyn Krogness, Tyler Soule, Nicholas Quintal, Jonathon Quintal, Miles Quintal, Corey Quintal and 19 great grandchildren.  

Per John’s wished, Memorials may be made to the Humane Society and AARF in lieu of flowers.

A private, family memorial mass will be held St. Nicholas Catholic Church, O’Fallon, IL, with Msgr. William Hitpas officiating.
