James Keefe Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James (Jim) K. Keefe, Sr., beloved husband, father, granddad, brother, uncle, godfather, brother-in-law, friend, mentor, and the best man many of us ever knew.

Born on December 12, 1955, Jim dedicated his life to his family, friends, and profession. He passed away at home on September 9, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family.

Jim was born to Thomas Q. Keefe, Sr. and Marion R. Keefe at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was the middle child – number 4 of 7 – older brothers Thomas Q. Keefe, Jr. (Rita Keefe), Robert Keefe (Ann Lemp), Patrick M. Keefe (Marcia Keefe) and younger siblings John G. Keefe, Barbara A. Bieri (Alan Bieri), and Michael F. Keefe (Sherri Keefe).

Jim attended St. Stephen and Our Lady of the Assumption grade schools before graduating from Assumption Catholic High School in East St. Louis, Illinois. He graduated from Quincy College and St. Louis University Law School.

Jim practiced law for 44 years before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission. Within a short time of starting to practice, he took over Keefe & DePauli, P.C. for his father – later practicing with two brothers and two sons.  He was a fierce advocate and tireless worker. He mentored countless lawyers. He was trusted and respected by clients, lawyers, judges, and doctors.

Jim was married to his best friend and the love of his life, Donna K. Keefe (nee Beyersdorfer). Donna caught Jim’s eye growing up just blocks from one another on Circle Drive.  They married in August 1981. There was no one more important than Donna.  They were totally and faithfully devoted to each other. Jim’s last years were hard. Donna remained at his side every step of the way.

Jim’s greatest accomplishment was raising a wonderful family with Donna. They have five children, James K. Keefe, Jr. (Erin M. Keefe), Andrew “Bubba” Keefe (Amanda Lovelace), Michael P. Keefe (Kelly Crosby), Mary Kathleen “Katie” Varel (Jeremy Varel), and Ellen E. Harpstrite (Todd Harpstrite).

As a father, Jim was larger than life.  Encouraging words or a kick in the butt, Jim and Donna preached selflessness, honesty, and hard work. Jim lived it. Jim set the example.

It did not matter how many hours he worked or how far he had to drive. Jim made it a priority to be at his kids' ball games. There were dinners, driving lessons, homework, vacations, and most importantly time – time to talk, time to listen, time to teach. Dad was there when we needed him.

He did not just make time for his own kids. Jim treated the kids’ cousins and friends as his own – quick to hand out “walking around money” and share stories as he held court in his kitchen corner. He welcomed everyone, reminding them, “Feel at home or go home.”

Then the real pride and joy came – 11 grandkids - Mary Kennedy Keefe, James K. Keefe III, Charles A. Keefe, Nora Keefe, John Keefe, Isla Keefe, James Finnegan Keefe, Maggie Varel, Molly Varel, Charlotte Harpstrite, and Harrison Harpstrite. Their stories brought Granddad the biggest smiles and endless joy. They could not be more excited to share everything with Granddad.

Jim had hobbies -  hunting, fishing, yard work and morel mushrooms every Spring. Still - he always had others’ best interests at heart.  Jim believed the greatest joy and happiness came from giving of yourself, doing for others and doing so without recognition.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Donna; five children and 11 grandchildren; four brothers and one sister; many nephews, nieces and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother John Keefe; father-in-law Charles Beyersdorfer; mother-in-law Mary Kay Beyersdorfer; sister-in-law Rita Keefe, and brother-in-law John Mitchell, whose memories he carried in his heart.

Jim will be remembered for his generosity, toughness, and unwavering devotion to his family. His character will continue to inspire all those he knew and loved. He will be deeply missed.
