Gary T. Berutti, 82 of Fairview Heights, IL passed away on his birthday, September 25, 2023, at Heritage at the Colonnade in O’Fallon, IL.
Born in Litchfield, IL on September 25, 1941, and experiencing a memorable childhood in Benld, IL, he later moved with his family to East Saint Louis, IL. He was preceded in death by his father, Constantino Martin Berutti (1994), mother, Mary Christine Barbush (2005), and his brother Anthony J. Berutti (1988).
Gary served as a member of the Army National Guard of Illinois for four years. Gary was a 1959 graduate of Assumption High School in East Saint Louis and attended Southern Illinois University and Washington University, St. Louis, MO. He belonged to several professional organizations and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fairview Heights, IL.
Gary spent many years pursuing a successful career in civil engineering and his career was his passion. Employment at notable firms such as HOK led him to establish Berutti & Associates, Inc. in 1997 which served the Illinois, Missouri, and surrounding regions. He was always proud to tell us about his involvement with projects such as the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY, Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Springfield, IL, and many area projects such as the Schmidt Art Center at SWIC, Belleville, IL.
In his “spare time” he enjoyed employment as a pari mutuel clerk at area racetracks, coaching his son’s soccer team at Our Lady of Assumption Parish, and had a passion for vintage Volkswagens and NASCAR. You could always find him on the sideline encouraging a victory at his grandchildren’s sporting events. He spent his time making memories at Lake of Egypt and later at the Lake of The Ozarks with family and enjoyed monthly Friends’ Night Out with his close friends for over 30 years.
Gary married Sylvia on September 2, 1963, at St. Adalbert Church, East Saint Louis, IL and recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Their marriage was blessed with a son and a daughter. He was the dad who was always there for his kids. He was PawPaw to his grandchildren and great granddaughter, and Sylvia always knew where to find him.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sylvia Berutti, nee Zeszutek; son, Christopher S. Berutti of Lake Ozark, MO; daughter, Stacy L. Berutti Snyders of Chesterfield, MO; grandchildren, Taylor (Tommy) Breunig of Saint Louis, MO, Christopher C. Berutti, of Columbia, MO, Cole Berutti of Millstadt, IL, Catherine Snyders of Washington DC, Anna Snyders of Saint Louis, MO; and great granddaughter Reese Breunig of Saint Louis, MO. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Theresa Berutti and Patricia Beyersdorfer; special aunt, Dora Berutti; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a special great-great nephew and cousins, godchildren, friends, and neighbors.
