Florence A. “Flo” Kassly, age 71, of Waterloo, IL, born on October 31, 1953, in East St. Louis, IL, died on Sunday, October 5, 2025, peacefully at her residence.
Flo was a 1971 graduate of St. Teresa Academy. She attained her Registered Nurse license in 1977 and received her BSN degree from McKendree College. Over the years, her passion was practicing nursing in hospital emergency rooms: St. Joseph’s Hospital, Alton, IL, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Belleville, IL, and Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL. Later in Flo’s career, nursing allowed her to travel to New Mexico and Alaska providing care in hospitals and clinics. Flo’s other passion was teaching nursing: Beck School of Practical Nursing in Red Bud, IL and later, the University of Alaska Anchorage School of Nursing. She currently was an infusion travel nurse throughout Southern Illinois and Missouri. Florence retired as a Major from the United States Air Force. She was a C-9A Nightingale and C-40 Flight Nurse, providing aeromedical evacuation services with the 73rd Aeromedical Airlift Squadron based out of Scott Air Force Base.
Flo was a loving mother, sister to 9 brothers and sisters, aunt and dear friend. She enjoyed cooking, reading, and attending family parties.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph John and Dolores Marie nee, Dove, Kassly, Sr.; siblings, Joseph J. (Sharon) Kassly, Jr, James D. Kassly, and Judith A. Kassly.
Flo is survived by her twin children, Angela Blattner and Michael Blattner; siblings, Anita C. Stephens, Geoffrey F. Kassly, Elizabeth A. Kassly, Charles R. (Jennifer) Kassly, Cecelia M. (Brad) Eilering, and Dolores A. Phin; a sister-in-law, Dolores “Lori” Kassly; and nieces and nephews.
Our family will miss Flo’s straight talking, no BS, funny, witty and sarcastic banter. But also, generous, loving, do anything for you, mother, sister and aunt. That was Flo.
