Evelyn Knox Obituary

Evelyn C. Knox, age 88, of O’Fallon, IL, born October 16, 1935, in East St. Louis, IL, died on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at her residence, Revela at O’Fallon, O’Fallon, IL.

Evelyn was a devout Catholic and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1953.  She went on to pursue her General Studies degree at the University of Illinois. Evelyn met and fell in love with John Knox while he was stationed in the Air Force at Scott AFB. John and Evelyn were married on April 19, 1958, and raised three children. The family resided in Chicago, IL while John completed his college degree in Dental and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The family moved to O’Fallon in 1966 and remained there until John and Evelyn’s deaths.

Evelyn was an incredibly supportive and loving wife and mother. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. For her, it was all about family. She loved playing The Goblins are Out Tonight, Tonight with her grandkids, celebrating her birthday for the entire month with friends and family, reading books, and saying her rosary daily.  Her zest for life and laughter was infectious to everyone she met. She loved her dogs, playing tennis, golf, skiing and was an incredible gourmet cook. However, she gave that up once her children left home and turned the cooking over to her husband, “Chef” John.  But her real passion was that of giving to others by volunteering with Meals-On-Wheels, Hospice, and Eucharistic Ministry.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. John E. Knox; her parents, George E. Detchemendy and Ann M., nee Zimmer; and aunt, Evelyn Schwartz, nee Zimmer.

Evelyn is survived by her three children, John S. (Irena) Knox of Shiloh, IL, Kurt E. (Dawn) Knox of Edgewood, WA and Barbara A. (Zeb) Quintal of O’Fallon, IL; her grandchildren, Ryan Knox, Katie Vasquez, Kara Diehl, Connor Knox, Tonya Ternovaya, Kyle Knox, Kristyn Krogness, Tyler Soule, Nicholas Quintal, Jonathon Quintal, Miles Quintal, and Corey Quintal; 24 great-grandchildren; her sister, Barbara Barrier; nieces, Beth Barrier and Tracey Barrier Edwards; nephew, Tim Barrier; and cousins, Ann Wegman, Christy Hornacek, Mark Wegman, Marilyn Huber, Cheryl Mussman Smith, and Ellen Mussman Zucker.

A very special thank you goes to Jonelle Krohn, and to the nursing, resident care, and support staff of Revela at O’Fallon, where mom lived; her private care team, Dana, Rose, Laura, Kim, Khami, Lisa, Andria, Jennifer, Whitney, and Amber; Susan Compton and the team from Ardent Hospice and Palliative Care of IL.  Everyone’s love, care and patience for Evelyn goes beyond words. You were truly her guardian angels!
