David Dowling, age 75, of Belleville, IL, born on June 25, 1948, in Mitchell, SD, died on June 24, 2024 at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Dave was a wonderful and loving husband, father, and overall family man. He was passionate about his work with United Steelworkers or America, working tirelessly for fairness, justice, and equality in the workplace. He spent over 50 years as a labor union activist. Dave began his employment at Granite City Steel, November 18, 1973. He became the president of Local 67 in 1982 until 1997. He was the staff representative for USWA subdistrict 2 in 1999 and served as the director for USWA subdistrict 2 for over 20 years.
He retired in February of 2021 and was able to spend more time on his many interests and hobbies. His favorite hobby was researching labor history in Southern Illinois and genealogy. He also enjoyed gardening, horseback riding, general wildlife, photography, biking, and listening to folk music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Hazel, nee Grage Dowling.
David is survived by his wife, Geneie Dowling; daughters, Sarah Dowling of St. Louis, MO and Kaitlyn Dowling (Jacob Douglas) of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Michael (Barbara) Dowling of Sioux Falls, SD; his sisters in law, Debra Williamson and Tina Williamson; and his nieces Leah (Blake) Davis of Loveland, CO and Megan Dowling of Sioux Falls, SD.
Per David's wishes, he was cremated.
A celebration of life will be held July 27, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Venice Social Club, located at 4168 State Rt 162, Pontoon Beach, IL.
