Cassandra McCune Obituary

Cassandra “Candi” McCune, age 74, of Swansea, IL, born on July 19, 1951 in Battle Creek, Michigan, died on Friday, January 30, 2026 at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.

Candi worked for many years in child education at William Holliday School in Fairview Heights, IL. She was a true artist at heart, who shared her love by presenting friends and family with her crochet items. Those lucky enough to receive one of her creations received not just a gift, but a piece of her heart, and a tangible reminder of her patience and talent.

Candi shared unconditional love with her life-long partner, Tom. Together, they showed by example the meaning of teamwork and commitment. Her loving support of her two daughters showed what family looks like. She had a passionate love for her grandchildren and her great grandchild, following their activities, cheering them on, talking about Grey’s Anatomy, and always providing her support. Candi cherished her relationships with her siblings and told hilarious stories of their growing up together.

She loved feeding the neighborhood animals, Patches the Cat, and Opie the Opossum, taking photos of sunsets, and chasing down moose and other wildlife. She enjoyed meeting friends at the winery or bar (we know Candi loved her wine!). An avid traveler, she  most enjoyed traveling near and far to visit her grandchildren.

With a profound appreciation for the majestic, Candi found joy in the delicate hover of a hummingbird and the quiet strength of a moose. She loved visiting breathtaking scenery, but her favorite “view” was always the faces of her beloved grandchildren and great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Maree, nee Palmer Westfall; and her sisters,  Cathy Dennis, Cindy Turner, and Patti Haupert.

Candi is survived by her husband, Thomas McCune; her daughters, Stacy (Jerry) Wildermuth, and Michelle (Paul) Elliott; her grandchildren, John (Leanne) Wildermuth, Matt Wildermuth, Allie Elliott, and Maddie Elliott; her great granddaughter, Isabella Wildermuth; her siblings, Annie Castle, Mike Westfall, and Kim Powers; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends who have become family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Blood Cancer United, organizations close to Candi’s heart.
