Josephine Henrietta “Keta” Garcia, (87), of Fairmont City, IL, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2018. Family and friends are deeply saddened by her unexpected death. She was a lifelong resident of Fairmont City, had many friends and was well known in her community. Keta belonged to The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in East St. Louis, IL.

There was nothing she loved better than family filling her house, eating her home cooked Mexican food, and teaching the younger generation to cook. We will always cherish our memories of annual tamale making day and stopping by on Saturday afternoon for beans, rice, and carnitas.

As a talented seamstress, people came to her home each day from near and far for her always perfect tailoring. She fussed over you like family and made your day with her spunk and witty personality - and you probably too were sent home with some of her homemade food.

We will all remember the comforting smell of her kitchen, the bright laughter coming from it, the sight of her leaning over her sewing machine fixing all our stuff, and the unconditional love she wrapped us in each day.

She was our beloved sister, Tía, neighbor, and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan “John” and Josephine (nee Cruz) Garcia; four brothers, John, Leonard, Paul, and Jessie “Joe” Garcia; two nieces Carol Jean (nee Garcia) Deichmann and Christina Martinez.

Surviving are her sister Betty (nee Garcia) Aly of Nixa, Mo, and her brother Mitchel (Nancy) Garcia of Fairmont City, IL. Nephews Jerry Garcia (Joanne) of Indiana, Paul Garcia Jr (Judy) of Fairmont City, IL, David Garcia (Annemarie) of Glen Carbon, IL, Dennis Garcia (Diana) of Maryville, IL, and nieces Pamela (nee Garcia) Carter (Bill) of Fairview Heights, IL, Gloria (nee Garcia) Daws (Bob) of Sun City Center, FL, Janet (nee Garcia) Hanley of Manassas, VA, Joni (nee Garcia) Meehan (Mike) of Waterloo, IL, Tina (nee Gadell) Larkin (Howard) of Nixa, MO, Sheila (nee Gadell) Auzat (Bob) of Nixa, MO, Tracey Garcia of Glen Carbon, IL, Terri Garcia-Kleimann of Caseyville, IL, Michele Garcia of St Louis, MO, Jennifer Garcia of Fairmont City, IL, Kim (nee Garcia) Martinez (Bobby) of Fairmont City, IL, Deanne (nee Garcia) Gudinas (Tommy) of Fairmont City, IL, and many cousins. Keta was very proud to be the Aunt of 55 nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fairmont City Christian Activity Center.

Keta’s wishes were to be cremated and have a private family service.
