Alexander J. Bregen, Jr., age 63, Mayor of Fairmont City, IL born on August 29, 1954 in East St. Louis, IL died on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Gateway Regional Hospital, Granite City, IL.
Alex was a graduate of Assumption High School in East St. Louis, IL and graduated from Benedictine College, Atchison, KS in 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree. He worked for St. Clair County in the auditor’s office and served as Deputy Treasurer. Alex also served as Mayor of Fairmont City, IL for 23 years taking office in 1995 until the time of his death. He dedicated his entire life to helping others, serving his city. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He enjoyed all sports and loved St. Louis Cardinal Baseball and the Fairmont City Bottle Cap Tournament.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander J. and Bernice J, nee Kocol, Bregen, Sr.
Alex is survived by his wife, Victoria M. “Vickie” Bregen, nee Cox; his step-children, Brittaney and Landon; his adopted son, Conrad; his sisters, Theresa Bregen of Fairmont City, IL and Annette Smick of Collinsville, IL; his niece, Amy Smick of Collinsville, IL; his good friend, Gary Schultz; and numerous cousins and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Fairmont City Fire Department’s Annual Christmas/Toy Drive in remembrance of Alex’s love for children and for Fairmont City or to the American Heart Association.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Kassly Mortuary, Ltd, Fairview Heights, IL.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2018 at Kassly Mortuary, Ltd, Fairview Heights, IL with Msgr. Jim Buerster officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
